New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
